Solutions
Do one or more of the following:
Solution 1
Upgrade to Aladdin Systems StuffIt Deluxe 4.5 or later or Expander 4.5 or later. Then, open StuffIt Deluxe or Expander, choose Edit > Options and select the Cross Platform tab. In the Convert Text Files to Windows Format section, select Never. Click OK and then reextract the archive. For upgrade information or technical support, see Aladdin Systems' Web site at
www.aladdinsys.com.
Solution 2
Ask the PDF file's creator to do one or more of the following:
-- Upload the original PDF file to the Web or network server again. For assistance, contact the Web server's administrator or the network administrator.
-- Re-create the PDF file, and upload it to the Web or network server again.
-- Remove any spaces from the filename, and upload the PDF file to the Web or network server again.
-- Upload the PDF file to the Web server using a different FTP application.
-- Move the PDF file onto the Web or network server using a method other than FTP (for example, copy the file).
-- Send the PDF file as an attachment to an e-mail message using a different encoding method. Refer to the e-mail application's documentation for instructions on creating a new e-mail message and attaching a file to it.
-- Send the PDF file as an attachment to an e-mail message, making sure to zip or stuff the fie before sending it.
Additional Information
PDF files are composed of textual information. Your Acrobat viewer reads this textual information and then displays the PDF file. A token is one kind of PDF textual reference. If a token or another piece of textual information is damaged or contains unexpected characters (such as extra carriage returns), the PDF file cannot be interpreted correctly.
Aladdin Systems reports that some applications may be unable to read files that were extracted using StuffIt. The problem isn't in the compressed files but in the extraction process: StuffIt incorrectly interprets some files, including PDF files, as text files.
PDF file token information or any other textual information can be damaged when the file is transferred to a Web or network server, or sent via e-mail. The damage can be caused by the way the file was transferred (such as FTP or e-mail), or by the application used to transfer it, particularly if you use an older version of the application. The transfer method or the application can also incorrectly add information, such as extra carriage returns.
These errors may also occur if the PDF textual information is not compliant with the PDF specification supported by the Acrobat product (for example, if it was created by a third-party application or it is damaged).
